Hacking the PSP has long been a popular pastime, but the 3000 model has proven a tough nut to crack. Don’t pop open the champagne just yet, though, Sony — Datel has revealed a special battery peripheral called the Lite Blue Tool that boots the handheld console into service mode, where downgrades to earlier, cracked firmwares are possible. Of course, most older PSPs could be downgraded without any additional hardware and you only needed a battery like Pandora if you failed the idiot test and bricked your system, but be patient, pirates totally legit homebrew types — Rome wasn’t burnt in a day. Lite Blue is priced at an affordable $29.99, not bad for an interim solution if homebrew and “backups” are your thing.

PSP 3000 finally, inevitably hacked by Datel’s Lite Blue Tool originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 18 Nov 2008 23:08:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Fans of the old-timey GameCube will rest easier tonight knowing that Hori is now manufacturing its variation of the classic controller, creatively named the “Classic Controller.” We’ve seen other gamepads in this style, but not many that get it as close to the original design as this — plus it has those insane autofire switches. These bad boys are available in black, white, and blue on December 4th in Japan, and you can pre-order them now for $29.90 over at Play-Asia.

Rather than just introducing these five items individually, Sony reckoned the world at large may pay more attention if they were unveiled in one fell swoop. To that end, we’re left staring at a new pair of noise canceling headphones (MDR-NC7; $50), travel speakers (SRS-M50; $50), a universal remote (RM-VL610; $30), EX Series earbuds (MDR-EX36V; $30) and stereo Bluetooth headphones (DR-BT160AS; $160). While the first two are pretty self-explanatory, color lovers will appreciate the three swappable back plates for the remote, and the water-resistant BT ‘phones pack a built-in microphone, rechargeable Li-ion cells and A2DP support. Everything should be available now if you look hard enough, and the full release with all the gory details is waiting just after the break.

We’ve definitely seen more expensive earphone covers in our day, but these are certainly amongst the most pricey ‘buds out there. A single set of these Casa Gi-designed earbuds are currently being sold in Bristol for £3,499 ($5,253), and all that money goes towards 59 diamonds (per bud) and an 18-carat gold coating. Quite frankly, we tend to feel that these are pretty garish, but we’ve no doubt whatsoever that someone, somewhere will make the trip over and snatch ‘em up. ‘Course, we can’t say how long they’ll remain safely lodged in the owners ears given the gadget crime rate in Britain, but we get the feeling these won’t really be used for casual listening, anyway.

Two bits of new information to tell you about. First, Art Lebedev’s AUX keypad is expected to be priced at “around $650.” Second, that’s a final pre-production prototype kicking it live with Art’s Verbarius clock in the background. With any luck, this programmable OLED keypad could be ready for a limited production run by Xmas.

Anytime we hear the words “incompatible” and “music game” mixed into the same sentence, we typically can’t resist the onset of a bitter beer face. That being true, we can’t say we’re too terribly bummed about this one, particularly since we highly doubt Microsoft’s Lips will have the same following as Rock Band and / or Guitar Hero: World Tour. At any rate, you should probably know that the accelerometer-packin’ Lips microphone will not work with RB nor GH at launch, though creator Keiichi Yano of Inis did confess that compatibility was theoretically possible with future patches. ‘Course, we doubt anyone will spend time on said patches unless Lips moves like a billion copies this winter, but we suppose anything is possible with a snap of the fingers and a pinch of pixie dust.

Well, it’s increasingly starting to look like the reports of Wireless USB’s demise may have been at least slightly exaggerated, as Italy’s Olidata has now followed Cables Unlimited’s lead in releasing a Wireless USB adapter set based on Wisair’s WSR601 single-chip solution. Like the Cables Unlimited set, the Olidata combo includes one adapter that plugs into your printer or other device and one that plugs into your laptop or desktop computer, which magically work together to let the two communicate with each other as if they were actually connected — you can also plug the dongle into any old USB hub and instantly have a Wireless USB hub. Of course, with WiQuest now out of the picture, it’s still far from a sure thing that Wireless USB will be around for the long haul, but those looking to get in on the standard while the going’s good can apparently pick up Olidata’s set in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and the U.K now for €59, or roughly $75.

It’s been nearly a year since we first saw the USB 3.0 connector make an appearance at CES, and after months of corporate infighting, spec-polishing, and technical navel-gazing, the future of consumer peripheral connectivity is here — in the form of complete specifications and a demo. Yeah, so maybe SuperSpeed USB isn’t making the most dramatic entrance ever, but hey, it doesn’t have to with 4.8Gbps transfer speeds, improved power management, and backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 along for the ride. As expected, the first wave of devices won’t hit until 2010, but Symwave’s giving attendees of this week’s SuperSpeed conference a taste of tomorrow with a demo of the Quasar USB 3.0 chipset, which is targeted at “sync-and-go” devices like phones and media players. Sounds lovely — now if you’ll excuse us, we have to go back to mourning the death of FireWire 400.

There must be a fashion-forward young man or woman out there brave enough to sport V-Moda’s new Vibe II with Microphone. These stainless steel alloy headphones follow in the footsteps of the popular (and much better looking) Vibe Duo and feature the noise-isolation, in-line handsfree microphone, call and music controls that we expect from the line. In addition, the ‘phones possess “solid and tactual sensation comparable to the finest jewelry and watches.” Right. If you’d like to see for yourself, these beauts are available for $128, exclusively at the Apple Store.
