Now here’s an interesting combination. Sharp has decided to liberally splash its AQUOS labeling on an all new photo player, which pulls double duty as a photo printer and a photo, um, display-er. So far as we can tell, users can load up images via a variety of memory card slots, Bluetooth, Infrared and even the local network (HN-PP150 only), and from there, they can either print for showing to grandma or output the content through HDMI. For those who connect it to an AQUOS LCD TV, they can also utilize the music playback functionality that’s baked in. The non-DLNA-compatible HN-PP100 (pictured) will go for ¥20,000 ($207) starting December 5th in Japan, while the network-friendly HN-PP150 tacks on another ¥5,000 ($52) and ships in January 2009.

The folks at Photography Blog offered a few first impressions about Canon’s PowerShot SX10 IS when they first got their hands on it a couple of months back but, as is their nature, they’ve now followed things up with a decidedly more thorough review of what they describe as a “sturdy plastic brick of a camera.” Among other things, they were apparently especially impressed with the SX10’s “bigger and better” lens, which they say is a marked improvement over the one on the S5, and they were happy to find that both the tilt-and-swivel LCD and dedicated record button for video stuck around for this incarnation. On the downside, you’ll have to do without HD video recording or RAW still shots and, while the overall ease of use is improved compared to the S5, those moving up from a point-and-shoot will still face a bit of a learning curve. There’s also the small matter of the camera’s price which, at $400, places it somewhat uncomfortably between some higher-end point-and-shoots and some entry-level DSLRs. Hit up the link below for some more details and, of course, plenty of sample shots.

Mark it down as a coincidence if you’d like, but a flurry of lawsuits revolving around the same companies just became public knowledge. For starters, Eastman Kodak has decided to sue Samsung and LG, alleging infringement of digital camera patents relating to image capture, compression and data storage; the suit is asking for “unspecified damages, and both cases seek injunctions prohibiting Samsung and LG from further imports and sales of the products.” Just hours later, Samsung hit back with this response: “Samsung plans to respond actively to these litigations and will remain committed to serving our customers by ensuring that accurate and reliable delivery of our products is not compromised in any way.” Got all that? Good. Moving on, we’ve also got chipmaker Spansion tossing a suit in Samsung’s direction, which is asking for “billions” in damages for patent infringement presumably related to flash memory. Who says it’s a slow period in the courtroom?

Pure Digital’s Flip Mino just broke free from the confines of the VGA kiddie-pool to find itself tip-toeing gingerly into the shallow end of sacred high-definition waters. But with a retail price of $230, it’s best to temper your expectations of the new Flip Mino HD. For that price you get about an hour’s worth of fixed zoom, 720p, MPEG-4 video recorded to 4GB of built-in flash memory. Plug the USB cam into your PC or Mac to launch the built-in FlipShare editing software for fine-tuning your videos before sharing (compressed down to 480×270) to MySpace, YouTube or direct over email — HD sharing via an unnamed partner is coming early next year according to Pure.

Walt’s buddy, Katie Boehret, over at the Wall Street Journal already put hands to gear and came away duly impressed by the video and improved sound quality. The she-Walt also found the FlipShare software to be much improved over the Flip’s previous bundled wares while the camera remained dead-simple to use. All in all, well worth the $50 premium over the previous Flip Mino. Sample video posted after the break.

Yeah, we confess we’re nerds and watched all that behind-the-scenes stuff on the Matrix DVD — when it’s the only DVD you own, you gotta get your money’s worth. If you’ll recall (don’t try and deny it), the much-lauded “bullet time” effect was accomplished by surrounding the leather-bedecked Keanu with dozens of digital still cameras to capture every millisecond of his limbo moves from every angle. Commercials aplenty soon co-opted the technology to push their wares, but Toshiba is flipping that formula here, hiring an ad agency with its very own bullet time vareint called “timesculpture” to plug Toshiba’s XDE technology. A circular rig with 200 Gigashot HD camcorders and 20,000 gigabytes of data later, they created this little number, which mixes full motion video, Matrix camera moves and a healthy dash of hipsterism. Check it out after the break.

Okay, we don’t know who came up with this idea, but we have to give them some credit for innovation, not to mention (in our opinion) some pretty attractive design sense. Yes, Target’s new gift card gimmick this holiday season is that it doubles as a cute, disposable digital camera. The little device runs on two AAA batteries, has a self-timer, and is packaged with a USB cord, driver disc, instruction manual and a voucher for 40 free prints from Target. The camera itself is a 1.2-megapixel affair with 8MB of memory on-board, which means it can store about 50 images. Now, we know this just a ploy to get us to buy Target gift cards, but we’re kind of smitten with this little thing. Oh, and: Bah! Humbug!

Don’t deny it — you’re inexplicably drawn to a digital photo frame that has its own phone number. Rather than just buying blind to see if you really dig the Cameo, however, why not pore over this here review? In testing, the device (manufactured by Parrot) was said to work practically as advertised, with just a few small quirks preventing it from receiving the highest marks. Critics were able to MMS over images from a variety of rival networks, though they did have issues making the frame accept a photo message from Sweden. Overall, however, it was noted that usability was remarkably high and that the process was easy enough for most anyone to grasp. ‘Course, you should probably convince yourself you’re going to use the thing quite a bit before committing to a $10 per month fee to keep the $100 frame connected, but outside of that, you ought not be too disappointed.
