Apple: Snow Leopard release in Q1 2009
Posted by Jo
Oops. Jordan Hubbard, Director of Apple’s Unix Technology Group, made a boo boo. The slide above was pulled from the deck presented last week at the LISA (Large Installation System Administration) conference. Up until now, Apple had only been willing to say that OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard would be ready “in about a year” — that was back in early June at WWDC. You just know that this will have Steve fuming given Apple’s tight control over information. One thing is perfectly clear: the race is on for both Redmond (rumored to be shooting for a mid-2009 Windows 7 launch) and Cupertino, nobody wants to be second with their next gen OS release.

Psystar’s antitrust claims against Apple dismissed
Posted by Jo
Well, we can’t say we didn’t see this coming — Judge William Alsup in the federal Northern District of California today dismissed Psystar’s antitrust counterclaims in Apple’s copyright infringement lawsuit against the wannabe Mac cloner. According to the judge, Psystar’s hotshot legal team failed to provide facts “plausibly supporting the counterintuitive claim that Apple’s operating system is so unique that it suffers no actual or potential competitors.” Not only that, but the judge also found that Psystar actually contradicted itself in pointing out that Apple has to advertise heavily to promote OS X against competing operating systems that perform the same tasks, and that Apple is “certainly entitled” to ask its customers to only use OS X on Apple machines. Yeah, that’s a smackdown. Psystar has until December 18th to amend its complaint and try these arguments again, but we can’t say we think it’s got a shot in hell here — and something tells us that that court-mandated alternative dispute resolution process isn’t going to get very far in Psystar’s favor either.
Disclaimer: Nilay’s a lawyer and sells bootleg OSx86 machines out the back of his van, but he’s not your lawyer and this isn’t legal advice.

MMS-capabilities coming soon to a Swedish iPhone?
Posted by Jo
The oft-bemoaned lack of certain, um… capabilities of the the iPhone is forcing individual companies to take desperate measures, it seems. It’s not entirely clear, but MacWorld says it’s confirmed with Telia that the Swedish-Finnish carrier’s developing an MMS-enabling app for the iPhone. MacWorld says the app will hit the market in the next two months, which is great news for everyone in Sweden. If you live anywhere else in the world, however, you’ll just have to continue on, rueing the day you ever encountered Apple’s MMS-spurning, copy and paste-hating handset.
Update: Though the source is Swedish, it’s entirely reasonable to believe that this’ll spread across all of Telia’s markets (and the world?). Thanks, commenters!
[Thanks, Martin]

Gilded, diamond-encrusted earphones go for £3,499
Posted by Jo

We’ve definitely seen more expensive earphone covers in our day, but these are certainly amongst the most pricey ‘buds out there. A single set of these Casa Gi-designed earbuds are currently being sold in Bristol for £3,499 ($5,253), and all that money goes towards 59 diamonds (per bud) and an 18-carat gold coating. Quite frankly, we tend to feel that these are pretty garish, but we’ve no doubt whatsoever that someone, somewhere will make the trip over and snatch ‘em up. ‘Course, we can’t say how long they’ll remain safely lodged in the owners ears given the gadget crime rate in Britain, but we get the feeling these won’t really be used for casual listening, anyway.

November is here and it looks like Apple just pulled the retail trigger on its 24-inch LED-backlit Cinema Display. While it still says “ships: November” Apple just added the “Add to cart” button allowing you to place your order with standard 5 business day, 2nd day, or next business day shipping. $899 takes home a 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, DisplayPort, built-in iSight camera / mic, integrated stereo speakers, 3-port USB hub, and MagSafe adapter for your like-equipped MacBook. Sure, it’ll look great next to all your Apple gear but you can get a similar panel (if not exactly the same) or better with more expansion for a lot less.
Update: It’s worth noting that while there are plenty of bright, 24-inch LCD monitors on the market, Apple’s is relatively inexpensive (possibly the cheapest) for LED backlit monitors of this size. We’ll have to see how it stacks up side-by-side before getting too huffy about the price. As to the lack of additional ports for game consoles, etc: huff away.
[Thanks, Rob P.]

Man, you just can’t win these days. So Apple offers up an energy-efficient, forward-thinking Mini DisplayPort on its latest MacBook / MacBook Pro, and now users that are still rocking displays sans HDCP-compliant HDMI / DVI ports are up fecal’s creek without a paddle. Apparently select content in the iTunes Store is laced in HDCP, which isn’t all that unexpected in and of itself; the problem comes in when you realize that the new unibody machines don’t offer a VGA / VGA-to-component output, meaning that you have to connect it to an HDCP-compliant display if you want to see anything. We know, one word in particular keeps coming to mind to describe this fiasco: awesome.

Logic and The Killers
Posted by Jo
Interviewing guitarist Dave Keuning prior to the release of The Killers’ new album, Ben Rogerson (musicradar.com) learned that “ the band’s hotly-anticipated third album Day Age was demoed in Apple’s Logic.” In fact, each member of the band “recorded demos separately in Logic, which allowed us to email our ideas to each other and to Stuart Price, the producer.”

At Adobe’s MAX event this morning, none other than Andy Rubin himself helped to demo Flash running on a G1, proving that it’s possible (in case years of Nokias with S60 browsers haven’t already done a sufficient job of showing that) and that Apple’s running out of excuses. It wasn’t mentioned exactly when we’d see it pushed out in an over-the-air update (or available from the Market, possibly, we suppose), but at least Rubin confirmed that Adobe and Google are pooling their collective noggins to make it happen. Ads for life insurance just aren’t the same without an animated dancing dude or flying pig, so we’re delighted to hear that some balance is going to be restored to the world.
